All we have is now

So I’ve made a few new things! The first set of Superbloom botanical poster prints are now available in the online store :)

After seeing the above sentiment on a road sign in Santa Cruz, I wanted to make a prettier version to have at home, to remind myself of the importance of the present moment.

And until now, I’ve also held off on sharing any of my own drawings—as I’m still trying to teach myself so many things in the worlds of design, photography, and pattern making.

Then I realized I was absolutely forgetting that, as it goes, all we have is now. There’s never a time when any of us are truly & completely ready for the next thing, and perfection doesn’t exist anyway.

So in my own mind, I’m trying to apply the Martha Graham quote that I’ve sent to so many creative friends over the years to keep encouraging them:

There is a vitality, a life force, a quickening that is translated through you into action, and there is only one of you in all time, this expression is unique, and if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium; and be lost. The world will not have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is, not how it compares with other expression. It is your business to keep it yours clearly and directly, to keep the channel open. You do not even have to believe in yourself or your work. You have to keep open and aware directly to the urges that motivate you. Keep the channel open.
— Martha Graham

Anyway, if you’d like to peek at the first batch of designs, please do! I’ll be adding more as we move through the seasons, with reminders that like nature, we all bloom in our own time.

Xoxo,
Kristen

Make It: Floral Cocktail Syrup

If you’re lucky enough to catch the end of lilac season at your local farmers’ market, it’s easy to make this sweet lilac syrup from Heather Crosby in cocktails, swirled into mocktails, and even topping your favorite dessert. Hint: it works well with nasturtium, peony, and honeysuckle petals, too!
